Paracetamol
Indications/Uses
Short-term treatment of mild to moderate pain & fever.
Dosage/Direction for Use
IV All doses to be taken up to qid. Min interval between each administration: 4 hr. Adult weighing >50 kg & adolescent 1.5 mL/kg. Max daily dose: 4 g. Adult weighing <50 kg, adolescent, childn weighing >33 kg (approx 11 yr) 1.5 mL/kg. Max daily dose: 60 mg/kg (w/o exceeding 3 g). Childn weighing >33 kg (approx 1 yr) & <33 kg 1.5 mL/kg. Max daily dose: 60 mg/kg (w/o exceeding 2 g). Childn weighing <10 kg (up to approx 1 yr), term newborn infant, toddler 0.75 mL/kg. Max daily dose: 30 mg/kg.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to paracetamol or propacetamol HCl (prodrug of paracetamol). Severe hepatocellular insufficiency.
Special Precautions
Hepatocellular insufficiency, severe renal insufficiency (CrCl <30 mL/min), chronic alcoholism/malnutrition, dehydration. Premature neonates.
Adverse Reactions
Rarely malaise, hypotension, increased levels of hepatic transaminases.
Drug Interactions
Reduced clearance w/ probenecid. Prolonged elimination t½ w/ salicylamide. Enzyme-inducing substances. Slight variations of INR values w/ oral anticoagulants (paracetamol 4 g/day for at least 4 days).
